Course Introduction

With markets and customer needs constantly changing, organizations need information and evidence that helps them adapt quickly to new challenges and opportunities so that they can deliver greater value and achieve true business agility. Yet often organizations that use Agile product development techniques use traditional management approaches, expecting leaders to set firm long-term goals and manage progress toward them with dashboards of static metrics.

That is why Scrum.org created the Evidence-Based Management™ (EBM) framework which is an Agile approach to help leaders guide their teams toward continuously improving customer outcomes, organizational capabilities, and business results. EBM focuses on customer value and intentional experimentation to systematically improve an organization's performance and achieve their strategic goals.

Course Overview

In the Professional Agile Leadership™ – Evidence-Based Management (PAL-EBM) one day* course, participants learn what EBM is and how to apply it through hands-on, activity-based learning. Through a series of exercises participants learn techniques that support a more agile mindset:

  • Use empiricism to set and achieve strategic goals, managing the unknown and complexity through experimentation and by adapting goals along the way
  • Create a cultural environment using clear goals, appropriate measures and trust to enable self-management and autonomy
  • Shift the conversation away from measuring progress purely through team performance metrics, toward a focus on customer-centricity and improving customer outcomes
  • Drive operational improvements by using four Key Value Areas (Unrealized Value, Current Value, Time to Market, and the Ability to Innovate) as lenses for evidence-based decision-making

View the different Focus Areas covered within this class and others.

*When offered in-person, this course is generally delivered in one day. When offered as a Live Virtual Class, the course may be broken up into more, shorter days.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Understand the essential aspects of goals and measures and how they influence behaviors and an organization’s culture and values
  • Help organizations embrace empiricism as a leadership approach. Using experimentation to incrementally steer toward the organization’s goals
  • An appreciation for how goals and trust act together to enable autonomy, transparency, and value delivery
  • Correlate market leadership and sustainability to curiosity, adaptation, and empiricism
  • Understand how to use EBM and its KVAs to focus measurements on improving market value and operational capabilities

Who Should Attend

PAL-EBM is for professionals in leadership roles (including executives, managers, Scrum Masters, Product Owners, coaches, and consultants) who:

  • Are responsible for the success of their product delivery programs or Agile transformations and are seeking a means to measure and demonstrate that success
  • Are looking for a framework that identifies improvement areas that increase their business agility, including their time to pivot to meet new challenges and deliver customer value
  • Want to help their organization embrace empiricism and experimentation to find solutions for complex problems (where more is unknown than known or the situation changes rapidly)
  • Want to articulate goals and measures in a way that fosters self-management and empower their teams to understand the connection between their work and the value their organization is providing and customer is receiving
  • Want to be more effective in how they measure success by using Agile measures rather than traditional measurement models (including the use of velocity)

Attendees should have read the Evidence-Based Management Guide, have an understanding of Agile practices and a desire to move away from traditional, plan-driven ways of working and measurement models, however they do not need specific experience with Scrum. Our Professional Agile Leadership- Essentials course helps leaders understand how to best support their Agile teams and is ideal preparation for PAL-EBM, but is not a prerequisite. Our Professional Scrum Product Owner and Professional Scrum Product Owner - Advanced courses teach Product Owners how to deliver value and can be a great complement to the PAL-EBM course.

Assessment Certification

All participants completing this course will receive a password to attempt the Professional Agile Leadership - Evidence Based Management (PAL-EBM) assessment. The industry-recognized PAL-EBM certification requires a minimum passing score of 85%. PAL-EBM class participants who attempt the PAL-EBM assessment within 14 days of receiving their free password and do not score at least 85% will be granted a 2nd attempt at no additional cost.

Good to know

If you have any questions relating to this course or to the booking process that are not answer on this page, please get in touch.

What preparation should I do before the course?

This will depend on the level of the course you are taking. If you are planning to do one of the foundational courses, then apart from reading the Scrum Guide and being familiar with the content in that, it's entirely up to each student to determine what - if any - preparatory work that they wish to do.

For the more advanced courses, we would recommend that you make sure that you are up to date with your foundational knowledge. You may also wish to read about the course subject in advance - if you would like any recommendations on resources that we think would help you, feel free to contact us.

What payment options do you accept?

We accept either AED or USD via the following payment methods:

  • Invoice - note that all invoices will need to be paid in full at least 10 days prior to the course date. For bookings made within 10 days, invoices are payable immediately.
  • Using a bank card via our payment partner Stripe
  • PayPal
  • Bank transfer - transfers will need to be received at least 10 days prior to the course date.
  • Cryptocurrency - we accept USDC, Bitcoin and Ethereum. Contact us to arrange this.

If you have questions or requests to make related to payment, please get in touch.

Do you offer private courses or training courses on dates that work for me?

Yes, we do offer this. If you can't see a course date that works for you, or if you want to explore the option of having training course dedicated to you or your organisation/team, just get in touch.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

If you are more than 10 days away from the date on which your course is scheduled to take place, you can cancel a course booking at any stage and request a refund. However, there is a small administrative fee of $20, which will be deducted from your refund amount, which is to cover the fees we incur when processing payments and refunds. For cancellations within 10 days of the course date, a 50% refund will be issued.

For date changes for courses that not within the next 10 days, you can contact us at any time to request to move your booking to another date.

I've got some colleagues/friends that are interested in attending a course - can I refer them to you?

Yes, of course. We'd be happy to receive introductions to any of your friends or colleagues that are interested in attending a course run by Agility Arabia. As a thank you to anyone referring, we will pay out 10% of the invoice when your referred friends/colleagues make a booking. Just be sure to let us know before they make a booking. Referral pay-outs are not offered retrospectively, so if they have booked and paid before you've made the referral, then you will not be eligible for a payment.

What happens if Agility Arabia cancels my course?

Whilst we do all we can to avoid cancelling public courses, there is a minimum number of students required for each course to go ahead. This is to ensure that there are sufficient attendees to make the learning experience valuable for everyone - Scrum.org courses are collaborative learning experiences that require interaction between students.

So for courses that are currently below that minimum, the advertised course date is provisional. Once the course has reached the minimum number of required students, we will let you know. Should a course not reach that minimum number of required students, you will automatically be refunded in full or offered the chance to select an alternative date that works for you.

What does my training course payment cover?

For both remote and in-person courses, your fee covers the tuition and two attempts at the Scrum.org exam. Should you not pass first time, you will have a second opportunity to take the exam within 14 days of the first exam.

If you've booked an in-person course, you'll need to cover your travel costs and any expenses during the day (e.g. lunch and refreshments).

Do you offer discounts?

If you are looking to make a bulk booking for multiple students, please get in touch with us directly to discuss options.

For individuals that have taken a Scrum.org PSM or PSPO course can take advantage of a 40% discount on next level courses. For example, if you have taken a PSM-I course, you can get a 40% discount on a PSM-II course. Similarly, PSM-II course attendees can get 40% off a PSM-III course. And for PSPO-I course attendees, there is a 40% discount on a PSPO-II course.

Is the booking process secure?

Don't worry - we use a reputable, industry leading payment provider (Stripe) to process payments. That means that Agility Arabia does not have visibility or access to your payment details at any stage.

The only personal details we will store as a result of a course or meeting booking will be your name and contact details so that we can manage your course booking.

Do I need to pay VAT?

For students that either (1) live in, or (2) attend an in-person course in a country within the GCC (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman), you will need to pay VAT of 5% on their bookings. For non-GCC residents who attend a course from outside the GCC, VAT is not charged.

If you need a VAT receipt, just let us know.

Is there any difference between a virtual course and an in-person course?

Regardless of whether you're attending a course in-person or virtually, there is no difference in the course content or the Scrum.org certificate that those that pass the exam will receive.

Why do you ask for my country of residence during the booking process?

Scrum.org offers different course pricing based on a person's country of residence. So in order to correctly charge students, we need to know what country each student is based in - and this will include a proof-of-address check.
